Hawaii Glaucoma Honolulu Glaucoma is the third-most common cause of blindness in the world. The good news is that if it is caught in its early stages, it can be treated.

Glaucoma is caused by several diseases that attack the optic nerve. It is estimated that as many as 1 in every 20 people over the age of 60 may suffer from glaucoma at some point in their lives. There is evidence of hereditary factors in the onset of glaucoma, so if any of your family members have been treated for the disease, we strongly urge you to come in for an eye exam and be screened for glaucoma.

Glaucoma can be treated in one of three primary ways:

  • Laser surgery can be used to reduce the pressure on your eyes and in restoring your vision.
  • Eye drops can be prescribed, depending on how early in the progression of the disease glaucoma is diagnosed.
  • Surgery also been used to lower ocular pressure and relieve the symptoms of glaucoma.
