Are you over the age of 40 and are experiencing a decline in near vision? This is extremely common and happens to almost everyone as they reach their middle age. This condition is called presbyopia and can make it harder to focus on near objects and can make reading difficult without glasses. Another condition, cataracts, is also common as we approach our 60’s and 70’s. These two conditions combined are sure to be extremely frustrating, not to mention drastically change your quality of life. Now there is a solution: the Symfony® IOL.
What is the Symfony IOL?
The Symfony® IOL is a device designed to improve vision after cataract surgery. The Symfony® IOL provides patients with a full range of clear vision, including up close. There is no worry of sacrificing one for the other.
The Symfony® IOL also comes in a toric variety. The toric lenses aid in correcting astigmatism, as well as cataracts and presbyopia. For those who lead active lifestyles and want to be reading glasses-free, the Symfony® IOL may be the best option.
How does the Symfony IOL work?
During cataract surgery, your Honolulu cataract surgeon will remove the natural lens inside of the eye. This natural lens is subject to many changes as we age. It becomes less flexible, which causes presbyopia. It starts to fog up, a symptom of cataract development. By removing this lens, your surgeon can correct both conditions!
It is not enough to simply remove the natural lens. In order to restore and improve vision, the lens must be replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL). There are several types of IOLs on the market today, each with a specific purpose.
The Symfony® IOL is designed to mimic the shape and flexibility of the natural lens. It is completely clear and fits perfectly in place, right behind your pupil. The Symfony® IOL will then begin to do its job – refracting the light clearly onto the retina, allowing for clear vision at all distances.
