Michael Yim, MD

Headshot of Honolulu Eye Doctor, Michael Yim, MD

Ophthalmologist Honolulu

Dr. Michael Yim is a board certified ophthalmologist that is dedicated to bringing the latest advances in eye care to Hawai‘i. He specializes in advanced cataract surgery and modern glaucoma treatment, including minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) designed to improve safety, reduce recovery time, and preserve vision. In addition to surgical care, Dr. Yim provides comprehensive ophthalmic services including routine eye exams, glasses and contact lens fittings, dry eye treatment, and diabetic eye care.

Born and raised in Hawai‘i, Dr. Yim is proud to be the only local-born physician to graduate with honors from the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and go on to complete both residency and glaucoma fellowship training at the renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, consistently ranked among the nation’s top eye hospitals and residency programs. Bascom Palmer has been ranked #1 the past 25 years and counting.

As an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at JABSOM, Dr. Yim is deeply committed to medical education and mentorship. He regularly teaches residents and medical students through lectures, grand rounds, and clinical training, while continuing to publish research on topics ranging from ocular oncology to innovative glaucoma surgical techniques combined with cataract surgery. Dr. Yim stays involved in clinical trials evaluating minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries to make sure he is the most up-to-date on the latest advances in surgical care.

Dr. Yim also serves as a consultant and advisor to pharmaceutical and medical device companies, is a board member of the JABSOM Alumni Association, and lectures nationally on cataract and glaucoma surgery. He is honored to serve as an oral board examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology, helping certify the next generation of ophthalmologists.

Committed to service both locally and globally, Dr. Yim participated in the Himalayan Cataract Project, performing sight-restoring surgeries in Ghana. He also serves on the board of the Homeless Outreach Medical Education Project, where he helped establish the first free ophthalmology clinic for underserved communities in Hawai‘i.

Above all, Dr. Yim believes in treating people—not just eye conditions. “One of the reasons I love ophthalmology is the meaningful relationships I’m able to build with my patients,” he says. “Connecting with people on a personal level allows me to make a lasting impact on both their vision and overall quality of life.”
